Back to The Route (Tues. July 27)

Today we headed back from Carlsbad to Route 66. On the way we stopped in Roswell, NM to visit the UFO museum. It is a fun place to stop that shows you all the evidence there is to prove that in June 1947 a UFO actually did crash into Roswell. Whether you believe them or not at the end of your visit at least you have been well entertained.

On the way back we stopped at another old diner. Something we would have expected to see on Route 66. We all tried Frito pie for the first time. To make it they fill the bottom of a bowl with Fritos then they cover it with beans, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and chilies. It was actually pretty good!!

We then continued on our trip entering back onto 66 in Santa Rosa, NM. We stopped at The Route 66 Auto Museum in Santa Rosa. They have over 30 different cars on display. We all really enjoyed this museum. They had all types of cars including vintage, classic and street rods from the 50s through the 70s. They are all in mint condition, many refurbished by the owner of the museum. Several of them are for sale so if you ever wanted a really nice car . . .

After the museum we headed to Tucumcari where we had reservations to stay at the Blue Swallow Motel. For those of you who are Cars fans you will remember the hotel in the movie. The orange cones at the motel are based on the Wigwam Motel we stayed at the other night but the office and neon lights are based on the Blue Swallow. It was a fun place to stay. Each room in the motel actually had its own garage and all of the garages had scenes pained inside. Bill, the owner was really friendly as were the other customers staying at the hotel. Most of us sat outside in benches outside of our rooms and visited with each other. The boys met a couple where the women was from Boston and the guy from Wilbraham!!! They were staying in the room right next to us. I never got to meet them but the boys were excited to have met someone from home.
