Mount Rushmore to Cody, WY (Thurs. July 8)

Today was another long day in the car but this time we were actually moving somewhere. We drove west from South Dakota to Cody, WY. This is a very long drive and many parts of it are pretty difficult. We had to climb over a very tall mountain and then down about half of the height on a crazy steep, very windy road to the level of Cody. Some parts of the drive are not for the feint of heart!!! (and I am feint of heart!!!) These mountains were so tall that they still had some snow on them. We drove along passed a few good size patches of snow. The temperature changes on this drive are amazing. We had temps as high as almost 90 at some points to only be in temps around 60 half an hour later. One of the most interesting things on this ride was there must have been a bike tour going on and we must have seen about 25 bicyclists riding up this mountain that the van was screaming in agony over!!! I don't know how they were doing it. I had not even the littlest desire to ever try it!!!!

Along the way the boys were entertained by an old gas pump (They could not believe there could be a gas pump that didn't take a credit card at it and that I could pump and pay after I got the gas.) and by a truck carrying a very wide load trying to get gas. We never quite figured out what he was actually carrying but it looked like the dump part of a very huge dump truck.

We made it to Cody quite safely and got the camper set up in time to head down the road for the nightly Cody Rodeo! We all absolutely loved the rodeo. I wish we lived closer so we could go at least once a year. Rodeos are really exciting. What was really neat was they had some categories for young kids so they actually had boys 12 and under riding bulls, girls 12 and under doing the barrel races and then they even had one little girl in the five and under category doing barrel racing. She was so cute!!! One of the highlights of the night is when they have every kid 12 and under come out into the arena and the chase down 3 small cows with ribbons on their tails. The kids who get the ribbons off get a small prize. There must have been over 50 kids running around!! Some were probably as young as 2 years old. It was a riot watching them chase these poor calves around the arena.
