Amarillo to Oklahoma City (Thur. July 29)

We left Amarillo today. First stop planned was Bug Ranch, a take off of Cadillac Ranch. From what the guide books said it should have been right on Rt 66. But to our disappointment we never found it. The boys were okay with it though because at least they had seen the more important ranch yesterday.

We continued into Groom, TX where there is a restaurant called the Blessed Mary. Here you pay what you want for your meal and the money goes to charity. We thought we would stop for a quick snack but alas, we were now two for two, it was also closed. It seems the person running it is ill. While in Groom we also stopped at the biggest cross in the Western Hemisphere standing at 190 feet tall. At least that wasn't closed!!

On through a few more towns and Texas and we were in McLean, TX. Here we found a well restored Phillips 66 Station, the Texas Route 66 Museum and the Devil's Rope Museum (barbed wire for those of you who don't know what it is.) It is amazing how large a museum they can make with barbed wire being the main item. There were displays with all types of barbed wire, sculptures of barbed wire, tools for cutting and working with barbed wire . . . I am sure you are all jealous you can't make this museum part of your next vacation.

Next stop, Shamrock, TX, home of the U Drop Inn, or for all of you Cars fans, Ramone's (the car that painted cars). It was a lot of fun to see it. Currently the Chamber of Commerce and a gift shop are located in the building. The people working there are excited about their little part in the making of Cars and make sure you know it was the model used for Ramone's. We did unfortunately miss the Blarney Stone though. In our excitement over the U Drop Inn we forgot all about it. They say that the town has an actual fragment of the real Blarney Stone direct from County Cork. Guess it will have to wait until next time around or until we make it to Ireland.

We then left Texas and headed into Oklahoma. We first stopped in Elk City to see the National Route 66 Museum which was part of a large complex that also housed a Transportation Museum and an Old Town Museum which is a series of buildings (some originals moved here) to show what a typical town in Elk City used to look like. (On the way there a a bunch of geese, about 15 of the, decided they wanted to cross the road from the pond to the museum. All traffic had to stop 'til they darn well felt like getting across to the other side.)

Shortly after the national museum we stopped at the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton. We all agreed that the national museum was a disappointment. There was not much there. The Oklahoma 66 museum was so much better. After awhile though all of these museums start to look the same. I think you would enjoy each one better if you did one state at a time and saw their museum at that point. You wouldn't feel like you just saw it somewhere else.

By now the kids are really hungry so we head to Hydro, OK for the Graffiti Cafe. We had heard this was a fun restaurant where the kids can write on the walls. Well guess what, strike three of the day. We could not find it. We think we had a bad address (We are learning that guide books make mistakes and they get outdated pretty quickly. We know now we need to start double checking before going anywhere.)

So we made the decision to eat some peanut butter crackers and put off eating a real meal for one more hour until we could get to POPs. POPs is famous for having over 500 different sodas available. It was a blast. It is so hard to choose a soda from the many choices. We had a meal with milk shakes for three of us (something they are also famous for) and then each of us picked some sodas to take with us to drink as we travel. We were disappointed though that they were out of Avery's Sodas "Gross Sodas" such as Dog Drool, Kitty Piddle and Bug Barf. If they had had them some older brothers would have been getting some. (heh, heh, we have learned the company is in New Britain, CT and sells the sodas not far from Westfield. They also mail them!! Maybe we can get our hands on them yet!!) The other cool thing about POPs is that they have a 60 foot tall neon soda bottle outside. It is really cool to see it lit.

We settled for the night outside of Oklahoma City. We hope to finish up in Oklahoma tomorrow.
