South Dakota Day 1 (Tues. July 6)

First let me say the Federal Stimulus money has been well spread throughout the country. Every state we have been through so far has had several projects under way. We have spent more time slowing down, moving over or detouring around in this last week than I have usually done in a year!!! We have been lucky though that none of the projects has caused any great delays.

After a fairly relaxing weekend we were back in touring mode. We had driven from Minocqua to the western side of Minnesota yesterday, made a quick overnight stop at a campground near the highway and was back on the road early finding ourselves in South Dakota late morning. First stop - Mitchell, South Dakota to see the infamous Corn Palace!!! It is a amusing side trip to see a palace that is decorated on the outside every year using corn. This year the theme was "Transportation Through the Years" and was decorated with pictures of a plane, a segway, a boat, a bicycle and a motorcycle. They use about 600,000 ears of corn to complete the murals.

We continued west next coming to the Badlands. The view is absolutely spectacular. Unfortunately it was cloudy so the colors didn't come out as well as they could have but it was amazing anyway. And, while all of you in the east were scorching in the near 100 degree heat we were getting quite chilled as the temps started to drop. They got down to 46 in the evening!! We had to run a heater in the camper to keep from freezing!!!

The weather in South Dakota was definitely crazy. The day started out sunny and warm. As the day progressed it got cloudy and the temps dropped. After the Badlands we were driving watching a huge storm many miles in front of us that we thought at first was going to move fast enough that we would actually miss it. We could see beautiful blue sky to our left, a very dark cloud in front (with a clear space under it that almost looked like there was a tunnel ahead) and then all black clouds to the right. You could see rain pouring down all to the right. As we got closer we realized the road curved right into the darkest black clouds and we were not going to be lucky enough to miss it. It absolutely poured and we had a good amount of hail. It was sooooo noisy as the hale bashed on our car. It was so dark and so eerie we were looking for a tornado. We were definitely a bit nervous. Well at least three of us were. Pedro in the meantime was doing what Pedro does best when he is in the car . . . . As he said to us "when I asleep, I asleep"!!

Finally the storm was behind us and we headed for our campground which was 5 miles west of Mount Rushmore. So on our approach to the campground we all got our first glimpse of Rushmore. We look forward to our visit there tomorrow.
