We continued west next coming to the Badlands. The view is absol
utely spectacular. Unfortunately it was cloudy so the colors didn't come out as well as they could have but it was amazing anyway. And, while all of you in the east were scorching in the near 100 degree heat we were getting quite chilled as the temps started to drop. They got down to 46 in the evening!! We had to run a heater in the camper to keep from freezing!!!
The weather in South Dakota was definitely crazy. The day started out sunny and warm. As the day progressed it got cloud
y and the temps dropped. After the Badlands we were driving watching a huge storm many miles in front of us that we thought at first was going to move fast enough that we would actually miss it. We could see beautiful blue sky to our left, a very dark cloud in front (with a clear space under it that almost looked like there was a tunnel ahead) and then all black clouds to the right. You could see rain pouring down all to the right. As we
got closer we realized the road curved right into the darkest black clouds and we were not going to be lucky enough to miss it. It absolutely poured and we had a good amount of hail. It was sooooo noisy as the hale bashed on our car. It was so dark and so eerie we were looking for a tornado. We were definitely a bit nervous. Well at least three of us were. Pedro in the meantime was doing what Pedro does best when he is in the car . . . . As he said to us "when I asleep, I asleep"!!
Finally the storm was behind us and we headed for our campground which was 5 miles west of Mount Rushmore. So on our approach to the campground we all got our first glimpse of Rushmore. We look forward to our visit there tomorrow.
